Digestive Disturbances : Acidosis , Laminitis , and Bloat

چکیده
INTRODUCTION In modern North American beef and dairy production systems, cattle typically are fed relatively high concentrate diets to achieve maximum production. Usually grains are processed to increase their digestibility in the rumen and in the total digestive tract; this increases feed conversion efficiency and helps reduce feed costs. However, the potential benefits of increased ruminal starch digestibility must be balanced against the increased risk of digestive disorders in cattle. While it is critical to meet the energy requirements of high producing ruminants, digestive disturbances must be avoided to ensure that meat and milk are produced from healthy animals in an efficient and costeffective manner.

Bovine acidosis: implications on laminitis.
Bovine lactic acidosis syndrome is associated with large increases of lactic acid in the rumen, which result from diets that are high in ruminally available carbohydrates, or forage that is low in effective fiber, or both. The syndrome involves two separate anatomical areas, the gastrointestinal tract and body fluids, and is related to the rate and extent of lactic acid production, utilization,...
متن کاملA Difficult Reality to Digest: The Effects of a Corn-Based Diet on the Digestive System of Cattle
A complex system of economic and political policies has led to the mass over production of corn in the United States. As a result of this overproduction, we now see corn in the majority of processed foods as well as animal feeds, in particular cattle feed. However, evolutionarily cattle are adapted to pasture diets not corn-based diets. Cattle have complex digestive systems, consisting of the r...
متن کاملSYMPOSIUM: ENVIRONMENTAL RISK FACTORS FOR LAMINITIS Environmental Influences On Claw Horn Lesions Associated With Laminitis And Sub-acute Ruminal Acidosis (SARA) In Dairy Cows
A dairy cow’s environment may influence the onset of laminitis and associated claw horn lesions by exacerbating changes in the hoof triggered by events at parturition, onset of subacute ruminal acidosis, or claw horn growth and wear and ground reaction forces on different walking surfaces. Environmental risk factors for laminitis and associated claw horn lesions include feed bunk space and desi...
متن کاملMinimizing the Risk for Rumen Acidosis
Ruminal acidosis is a common disease in high yielding dairy cows, during which the rumen pH is depressed for several hours per day. There is no general agreement of the definition of the disease, and its diagnosis based on rumen pH measurement is invasive and inaccurate. As a result, the disease often goes unnoticed, and its impact is not well recognized. Surveys suggest a prevalence of between...
متن کاملRelationship of acidosis to other feedlot ailments.
Laminitis often follows lactic acidosis and is accompanied by increased blood and rumen histamine. However, since histamine is poorly absorbed and absorbed histamine is rapidly metabolized, and since high levels of oral histamine have not produced laminitis, it is unlikely that ruminal histamine causes laminitis. Lactic acidosis leads to rumenitis, which, in turn, leads to liver abscesses becau...
